Phenomen is a new French watch company based in Besançon and founded by Alexandre Meyer, a graduate engineer of IFMA (French Institute of Advanced Mechanics) with a background in the automotive industry and industrial design. Phenomen’s first model, Axiom, provides a demonstration of the creativity of the brand with lines that will certainly appeal racing drivers and lovers of sport cars. The watch features an inclined time display in order to provide the time on a driver’s wrist without needing to take the eyes off the road.
Available in natural titanium, black titanium, or titanium and carbon fibre, with the possibility to choose polished, satin or sandblasted finishes, the complex Grade 5 titanium case (47 mm x 42 mm x 17.3 mm) houses the exclusive hand-wound Phenomen PH-010 calibre, designed and assembled in France. Beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 mph), this movement is comprised of 267 components. Thanks to its multi-level construction, the PH-010 can accommodate two very large barrels in series which deliver more than 100 hours of power reserve – something that would not have been possible in a conventionally-structured mechanism.
Hours and minutes are indicated by means of two retrograde displays on conical amphitheatre and can be adjusted independently. The escapement mounting at 12 o’clock stands out prominently without any visible link to the rest of the movement. The two crowns are used to wind the movement and set the time. Waterproof to a depth of 30 metres / 100 feet, the Phenomen Axiom in titanium has an indicative price of Swiss Francs 72,000.
