Living in a Shell – Nautilus House

Hautilus house

This amazing house was build in 2006 by Arquitectura Orgánica. A young couple with two children from Mexico City who after living in a conventional home wanted to change to one integrated to nature. The goal of this project was to make it feel like an internal inhabitant of a snail, like a mollusk moving from one chamber to another, like a symbiotic dweller of a huge fossil maternal cloister.

  1. It is a unique house with amazing details. It must be a pleasure to live in it. There is another beautiful shell-shaped house in Isla Mujeres, Mexico, and fortunately this one is opened for tourists.

  2. These are really cool homes but I don’t know if I would want to live in one. Probably fun to visit or stay for a little while though.

  3. Fantastic! Just Brilliant! I like not only the architecture, but also the interior design of this house. I wish I could live in such kind of house…. marvelous…

  4. Love this house. It would be a dream come true to live in such a home. Reminds me of another amazing house – the Bavinger House by Bruce Goff (Norman Oklahoma)

  5. Its amassing, awesome and will be cool to live in such a bueatiful home of shell what ay bueat

  6. Cool houses. I remember visiting a house like this in Vietname, can’t remember the name of the house. The owner was very eccentric but a lot of fun!

  7. very impressive, not just the shape but all the living things that they have included inside. If I had the money…ooooooooo

  8. Gaudi, yes! But check out the careful orientation to sun exposure… and the use of materials that could be very organic, locally obtained in many parts of the globe and make possible “hand crafted” construction. Living in the round would, should and could be ultimately better than some of the inefficient boxes most of us call home! So please, go ahead and send me back to the 60′s…. when I can have enough “spare time” to be so creative and build like this!

  9. That is spectacular. Very strange and looks like a smurf should live there. Nevertheless, beautiful. Thanks for posting these pics.

  10. Beautiful houses this is really a superb and eye catching creation the idea and finish job is so beautiful.

I enjoy the information you present here and can’t wait to take a look when I get home. I’m surprised at how quick your blog loaded on my mobile .. I’m not even using WIFI, just 3G .. Anyhow, awesome site!

  15. Does THIS exist in reality???? I’m simply blown away, really… Don’t have words to express what I feel..it’s SO beautiful! I wish I visited this place sometimes. Amazing

  16. It feels like a house of some sort of fairy tale, populated by elves and fairies! Excellent post.

  17. This looks like something the Tellytubbies would live in!
The design and colours are pretty impressive, great as show home more than a practical living space wouldnt you say?

  18. What kind of style is it? Eclectique? It looks like from fairy tale. Especially stained-glass windows!

  20. a mollusk moving from one chamber to another, like a symbiotic dweller of a huge fossil maternal cloister.

  21. Nice, but very expensive and, I think, inconvenient to live there for a long time.

  22. This post bring a big surprise for me.I like those shell house. And i hope it is become the truth one day and i can live in it.It is a art.

  23. Seriously?! That is a sweet house! I would pay to go see that thing. Very unique and reminds me of the flinston’s house.

  24. Another exotic house. I wonder what would be my feelings if I live in that house even for one day….Amazing work of arts.

  25. I can’t help but think of Final Fantasy VII with this one. Looks just like the houses in the City of the Ancients.

  26. This might seem bizarre to a lot of people. To me it’s just the natural extension of an artistic mind. It’s a home I’d love to live in, but even more than that, it’s a home I’d love to dream in. It’s the most creative architecture since Earth Homes.

  27. Another exotic house. I wonder what would be my feelings if I live in that house even for one day….Amazing work of arts.

  28. Amazing contours in this house. I am very much gratified to see this as an ideal home for me. It is really unique.

  29. Wow ! You sure have done a great effort putting these websites in place. These tools sure are of great help. Such a cool house !

  30. This is such an awesome way of life. Being a nature lover has been brought on a whole new level.

  31. The shower is just fantastic. so simplicistic and so amazing at the same time.I probably could spend a whole day in there 🙂

  32. Thats an mazing house and ever so inspirational. It just goes to show you can fulfil your fantasies so imaginatively.

  33. Yo this is cool but kinda of ridiculous, its seems more like an action figure still in the box.

  34. Beautiful and unique house! It’s like you are living in a dwarf’s house. I love the colors! Very creative. Sometimes it is refreshing for the eyes to look at something different.

  35. A rather self-conscious effort to be cool. Next up — a frying pan modeled after a seastar.

  36. I used to think about living in such a house- but my dream house was covered with mother-of-pearl 🙂

  37. Looks great, but still I would rather choose to live in a regular modern house 😉

  38. wOw, they are just great. I to would love to have one of them as my bathroom. Dreams are Good.

    Thanks for sharing this,

    John from Australia

  39. Amazing but how are there plants and trees in the house? Wouldn’t that cause problems? Like bugs. and how does it grow in there?

I so badly want to live in a house filled with plants…

  40. I forget the name of the architect who designed this, but he is based in Mexico. His designs are all very organic, and striking. I would love to live in one of the homes he has built.

  41. organic living, brilliant, it’s great to see these twists in architecture. Excellent post

  42. who wouldn’t want to live in a fairytale – I can’t imagine EVER having a bad day in this space! sigh….

  43. if it wasn’t so literal and every opening wasn’t like an orifice it might be cool. you can’t compare this to gaudi, what an insult

  44. This is the limit of dreams I think.
The designers must have drunk too much to build it:)

  45. the star shine on moonlite skies today
it’s truely a wonder of life.
    very good work of art

  46. I think,’Living in it would certainly change one’s life perception and thoughts towards more harmony!’

  47. this is shopped, i can tell because of some of the pixels and from seeing quiet a few shops in my time

  48. Wow! I feel like I always be relaxed living in a house like that. So beautiful and soothing!

  49. Very positive house. Id like to live there. But i would have more windows…

  50. i like the rainbow window.
but i just hate the aesthetic of the rest of it. 🙁

  51. I love it, if only we had more adventurous organic, curvaceous architecture available on the property market. Sick of boxes and rectangles…. boring!

  52. Wonderful, fun loving place.
Nature is beautiful, and so are copies and faithful reproductions of nature.
As natural and Eco friendly as could ever be….

  53. This is amazing. Truly beautiful. I’d love to live there.

(haha, these people totally smoke pot…I gotchyou :))

  54. Nice! A whole complex of such themed house and we can call it “Wonderland”..! =D I want one…!

  55. That is sick!! Beautiful house! …but looks like the architect was on quite the trip when he thought this up– but nevertheless awesome!

  56. Perfect place for (ahem) “exotic role-playing adventure night” – She’ll dress up like a crab, and I will wear an urchin costume. Bring on the KY! =P

  57. solo quiero vivir ahy!!!!!!!!! dentro de un caracol bajo el mar de mi realidad….

  58. that looks so cool, so comfy and it’s also eco-friendly.I would die to have one.

  59. the shower is just fantastic. so simplicistic and so amazing at the same time.I probably could spend a whole day in there 🙂

  60. That is freakin awesome!! Only thing I didn’t see was a kitchen. But it would be the ultimate guest house I guess.

  61. i was hoping somebody else got reminded of FFVII
now i feel slightly less nerdy 😛

  62. This person has too much spare time on their hands. Back to the 60’s with you! You have no place in the modern world! Oh yes, and take your plastic furniture with you!

    1. If the furniture was plastic, it might have been produces from recycled trash bottles or other “found objects”, like the mosaic of colored glass. Thought, ingenuity, skill and a fine meld with nature is what I see here. Gaudi, yes! But check out the careful orientation to sun exposure… and the use of materials that could be very organic, locally obtained in many parts of the globe and make possible “hand crafted” construction. Living in the round would, should and could be ultimately better than some of the inefficient boxes most of us call home!
