Tom Dixon’s Melt Small Portable Light isn’t the kind of object you walk past without noticing. It has that quality rare in design – a presence that works whether it’s switched on or off.
The Melt collection first appeared around 2014, developed in collaboration with FRONT, a Swedish design collective. The concept drew from two unlikely sources: melting glaciers and deep space imagery. The result was a series of distorted, half-mirrored orbs made through blow molding and vacuum metallization of polycarbonate – the same coating technique used on mirrored sunglasses, borrowed and repurposed into something entirely unexpected. Switched off, the Melt is a crisp reflective sculpture. Switched on, it turns translucent and throws a warm, liquid glow that genuinely looks alive. Over the following decade it became one of Dixon’s most recognized pieces, appearing as pendants, chandeliers, floor lamps, and table lights in restaurants, hotels, and homes worldwide.
The Portable takes that same visual language and cuts it loose from the wall. It runs on a 2.5W LED producing 100 lumens at 3000K – warm, ambient light rather than task lighting. Battery life reaches up to ten hours, recharging in around five via a magnetic USB-A connection. The IP44 rating means it handles splashes without issue, making outdoor use genuinely practical. Touch dimming lets you adjust the mood without hunting for controls. Finishes include black, silver, gold, copper, and fluoro for those who want something bolder.
The portable lighting category has grown considerably as batteries and LEDs have improved. Most of what’s available tends toward safe, minimal shapes that blend quietly into any space. The Melt Portable goes the other direction entirely – it brings a decade of accumulated design character into something small enough to sit on a nightstand or a garden table, and it loses nothing in translation.
At $275 to $330 depending on finish and retailer, the price reflects that history. It isn’t the brightest or cheapest option in the category. What it offers instead is an object with a real point of view – one that manages to look considered and alive in equal measure.
