Pininfarina, an Italian design studio renowned for its influential role in automobile design with iconic creations like the Ferrari F40 and Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, has ventured into a new domain: furniture. With its debut collectible piece, the chaise longue named Oksýs, Pininfarina marries its automotive heritage with a bold foray into furniture design.

Oksýs emerged from the creative mind of Marco Becucci, an in-house architect at Pininfarina, and is an emblematic representation of the studio’s design philosophy, which emphasizes the integration of beauty and technical innovation. This new piece is crafted as part of a broader initiative to align with Pininfarina’s branded residential projects, notably the Cyrela development in São Paulo, Brazil.

The design of Oksýs is strikingly unique, characterized by a dualistic nature that Becucci describes as “oxymoronic.” The upper segment of the chaise longue is sleek and smooth, reminiscent of the flowing lines found in sports cars, which seamlessly transitions into a craggy, rock-like base. This juxtaposition is not merely aesthetic but conceptual, symbolizing the harmony between man-made and natural elements, suggesting that both are interconnected facets of the same universe.

Becucci’s design process for Oksýs involved a series of intricate steps akin to those used in automotive design – starting from initial sketches to ergonomic testing and computer-aided modeling, followed by physical model-making. The prototype was meticulously crafted using CNC milling and finished with polyurethane and shiny epoxy resin to achieve a metallic sheen, enhancing its futuristic appeal.

The decision to produce Oksýs in a limited run reflects Pininfarina’s dedication to exclusivity and luxury. Only three units of the chaise longue will be created, each to be sold exclusively through Rossana Orlandi’s gallery, a space renowned for showcasing avant-garde design. This exclusivity is underscored by the involvement of prominent figures in the design and automotive industries, including Rossana Orlandi, designer Giulio Cappellini, and Pininfarina CEO Silvio Angori, who collectively played a role in selecting this groundbreaking design.

The introduction of Oksýs at Milan Design Week marks a significant moment for Pininfarina, symbolizing a fusion of its storied past in automotive excellence with a burgeoning interest in interior design and luxury lifestyle products. This strategic expansion allows Pininfarina to explore new creative territories while maintaining its commitment to innovation and the elegant integration of form and function.

Pininfarina’s previous collaborations, such as with bicycle manufacturer Diavelo and Czech tractor maker Zetor, demonstrate its versatile approach to design, extending its influence beyond the automotive sector to impact everyday objects and lifestyle products. With Oksýs, Pininfarina continues to push the boundaries of design, promising a future where its legacy of elegance and innovation persists across various domains.
