Urwerk Bids Farewell to the UR-120 “Spock” with the New Blue Planet Edition

Urwerk Bids Farewell to the UR-120 “Spock” with the New Blue Planet Edition

Some watches tell the time. Others tell a story. The Urwerk UR-120 “Spock” has spent the last few years doing both, combining one of the most unconventional time displays in modern watchmaking with a playful nod to science fiction. Now, the independent Swiss brand is giving the model a final sendoff with the UR-120 Blue Planet, a limited edition of just 20 pieces worldwide.

Since its debut in 2022, the UR-120 earned its “Spock” nickname thanks to a distinctive mechanical motion hidden within its satellite hour display. As each hour satellite completes its journey across the minute track, it splits into two separate halves, briefly forming the iconic V-shape associated with the famous Star Trek salute before rotating independently and rejoining to indicate the next hour.

What makes this display remarkable is that the gesture is not merely decorative. The mechanism is a genuine feat of engineering. Urwerk’s revolving carousel contains an astonishing 175 individual components, relying on a sophisticated system of lyre-shaped springs and Maltese crosses to coordinate the movement of the satellites with exceptional precision. It remains one of the most complex and inventive interpretations of a wandering-hours display available today.

For its final appearance, the UR-120 adopts a new aesthetic inspired by Earth as viewed from space. The large 47mm x 44mm case receives a deep blue sandblasted finish that gives the watch a distinctly cosmic character. The two-part case construction is designed to appear seamless, while the flowing upper shell extends naturally into articulated lugs for improved comfort. A hidden spring integrated into the lower lug helps the watch adapt more comfortably to the wrist despite its substantial dimensions.

Inside the case, Urwerk has highlighted the heart of the mechanism with 24K yellow gold PVD treatment applied to the lyre springs and Maltese crosses. According to co-founder Felix Baumgartner, the gold serves a functional visual purpose by identifying the exact points where mechanical energy is stored and released throughout the display’s operation.

Powering the watch is the automatic Calibre UR-20.01. The movement is equipped with Urwerk’s distinctive Windfänger rotor system, which uses an airscrew-inspired governor to regulate winding efficiency. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a 48-hour power reserve, the movement features high-end finishing throughout, including circular graining, sandblasting, and Côtes de Genève decoration.

Legibility remains a priority despite the unconventional display. Luminous markings ensure visibility in low light, while the watch is paired with a blue calf leather strap featuring a ballistic-fiber-style embossing that complements the futuristic design.

With production limited to only 20 examples, the UR-120 Blue Planet represents the end of one of Urwerk’s most memorable creations. Priced at CHF 115,000 before taxes, or approximately $128,000, it is a fittingly exclusive farewell to a watch that transformed a science-fiction reference into one of the most sophisticated mechanical displays in contemporary horology.
